Patrick Suen
Iaido Renshi 6-Dan / Kyudo 3-Dan
Patrick Suen is the founder and head instructor of Tokubokai and has been practicing martial arts for 20 years. He serves on the Board of Directors (2014-present) of the Canadian Kendo Federation, and has the appointed position of national secretary.
Patrick has been an active contributor to the Canadian and International Iaido community, having founded many events and initiatives, including the:
Pan-Am Championships (2018, 2024)
Team Canada Iaido (2018 - Present)
Ottawa Kyudo Association (2021)
Patrick is a 13-time medalist in competition within the Americas, with 6 x Gold, 4 x Silver, and 3 x Bronze over the past 10 years — most recently achieving Gold in the 6-Dan division at the 2024 Pan-American Iaido Championships in Vancouver.
In Canadian national competitions, Patrick has earned 3 x Gold, 6 x Silver, and 2 x Bronze in individual and team competitions.
Outside of Martial Arts
Patrick’s wife, Hanna, also practices Iaido, and is an official member of Tokushikai in Japan. In addition to raising their young daughter together, Patrick works professionally as technology and business strategy consultant, while Hanna is a special education teacher.
